Garage Door Spring Replacement

Did You Know?

Garage door springs require replacement every 7-10 years, or after about 10,000 cycles of opening and closing. If you suspect your garage door springs might be broken, we recommend booking an appointment with a garage door repair technician. Contact us to schedule your appointment today!

Garage Door Spring Replacement

Your garage door is one of the main entrances of your home and is usually used more than the front door of your home. Keeping this in mind, your garage door will endure a significant amount of wear and tear throughout the years. If your garage door is having trouble opening and closing, there could be a problem with the springs. Garage door springs operate under tension, and if they aren’t installed properly, they can become a danger to you and your home. Below, you’ll find information on how to identify signs of a broken garage door spring, as well as details on spring repair and replacement.

If you suspect your garage door spring is broken, we recommend contacting Suburban Door to schedule an appointment today.

Signs Your Garage Door Spring is Broken

There are several indicators that your garage door spring is broken or on the verge of breaking. If your garage door exhibits any of the following signs, contact the Suburban Door team for expert repair services.

  1. Loose Cables: Broken springs can cause cables to lose tension and become slack, which is a sign that the garage door springs are not functioning correctly.
  2. Bent or Misaligned Garage Door: If your garage door appears to be bent or misaligned, there could be a broken spring causing the issue. If the door appears to be tilted or uneven while moving, this is a sign of a bent door. To prevent further damage, stop operating the door as soon as you notice this problem.
  3. Loud Noise: A broken garage door spring often produces a loud noise. If you hear this sound, inspect all the springs to ensure nothing is loose or has fallen. Typically, there will be a loud, banging sound even if the door hasn’t fallen.
  4. Rapidly Falling Garage Door: If your garage door descends more quickly than usual, it may indicate that a spring has broken. Since garage door springs bear the weight of the door, it’s crucial to contact a professional technician right away.

Why Do Garage Door Springs Break?

Garage door springs break and sustain damage for various reasons. See below for some of the most common reasons garage door springs break:

  1. Wear and Tear: Most garage door springs are designed to last for 10,000 cycles, with one full opening and closing of the door representing a cycle. Though this may seem like a lot, daily usage adds up quickly, putting significant strain on the springs, especially for those who use their garage doors frequently.
  2. Lack of Maintenance: Regular maintenance is vital for prolonging the life of your garage door springs. While maintenance can increase the lifespan, all springs will eventually fail. We recommend having your springs inspected annually to ensure they are in good condition.
  3. Rust: Exposure to harsh weather can cause rust to form on garage door springs, their lifespan. Proper lubrication helps prevent rust and corrosion, which can weaken the spring coils, leading to breakage.

If you need garage door spring repair or maintenance, Suburban Door is here to help. Schedule an appointment today.

Jim from Suburban Door is a miracle worker! Happy Tails Renovations, LLC was doing a bathroom remodel in West Bloomfield. Homeowners garage door was an only Stanley model who stopped making garage door openers in 2001. The safety laser was rigged on the actual opener so when we closed the garage door we accidently left a home depot bucket inline with the door. So, door comes down and bends the rod from the opener to the wall. We called around multiple places and every kept wanting me to make an appointment for a technician to come take a look at it. Each time I explain I don’t need a technician. I need a specific part and could send a photo to see if they carry it. Nope, everyone wants to send one of their guys out so they can charge you only to say they don’t have the part and that the whole thing will need to be replaced. So, I head to Suburban Door Company. At this point, I feel like there is no way anyone has this discontinued rod and that we are probably going to have to replace the whole thing. In comes Superman Jim, who says to give him a minute and check in the back. In some sort of miracle, Jim comes out with the exact part that I need that has to be at minimum 23 years old if not older. Do you believe in miracles? Thank you Jim and Suburban Door Company!!!

I was instructed to buy a door at Lowe’s. Steve said it would work. Mike and his son came out, told me that was wrong, and hooked me up with a much cheaper door. It took a while, but Mike and his son were great. We are so happy with their service. Good guys. Steve was able to get the door quickly, but he should have known the one I got from Lowe’s ($800) wouldn’t work in our old Garden City home. Loved Mike and his son though. Good guys and they finished the job quickly.
